Mount Pocono residents will get a new store to buy discounted groceries in 2017.

ALDIs, known for its store brands and low prices, will be moving in on Route 940.

The store plans to construct a new building next to Ray Price Ford at the intersection of Commerce Street, catty-corner to the new CVS, according to Daniel Perich of KW Commercial, The Daniel Perich Group. ALDIs hopes to build an 18,000 square foot building there.

The agreement with ALDIs to buy the property is expected to close in early January, according to real estate agent Jackie Leonard of KW Commercial.

ALDIs chose the Mount Pocono location for a variety of factors that go into selecting an ALDI location, ALDI Center Valley Division Vice President Bob Grammer said. That includes population density, proximity to competition, cost of the property and traffic patterns.

“We want to be conveniently based where ALDI customers are located,” he said.

The company has another store in Stroudsburg.

“It’s something that’s needed,” Sen. Mario Scavello(R-40) said. His district includes Mount Pocono.

“I think it plays well and gives people another choice. And another thing is the jobs. It means more jobs.”

ALDIs operates nearly 1,600 stores in 35 states. More than 90 percent of the products it sells are ALDI exclusive brands, according to the company. That, it said, allows it to sell its products at lower prices by avoiding the advertising and marketing that raise the cost of national brands.

Customers know the brand for its 10-cent shopping bags and 25-cent deposits on shopping cart rentals. ALDIs also carries national brands, which make up about 10 percent of its product mix.

“The store will be a nice addition to the area and provide some jobs and additional economic growth to the Pocono Mountain region,” Perich said.

The company said it was too early to confirm other details of the store.
